Project: Create a Symbolic Map
|
"As I began walking, I immediately noticed that there were these webbed lines everywhere; in the road where it looks like they have filled in cracks, in driveways where the grass is trying to break through, in the tree branches as you look at them with the sky as a backdrop. This caused me to continue to look for different lines and patterns throughout my journey, patterns that oil made on the street from cars, at the grass, different patterns brick and stone made on houses..."

Project: Juxtaposing Two Sorts of Reality
"Using images of fresh, seemingly real produce, I superimposed images of maps onto produce in order to shed light on the artificially constructed world of the produce section of the grocery store. Using a background of perfect produce, fresh and moist sheds light on the underlying consequences of GMO production, bacteria, and pesticides."

Project: Create a Collage in Google Earth
"I moved around a lot growing up, so I think its grown on me, since I move a lot as well. I decided to take this idea and run with it, and make a map of MY neighborhood- a neighborhood that combines all of the other neighborhoods I have lived in from around the world. I purposely placed my foreign neighborhoods outside of the cul-de-sac, not only for physical distance purposes but also because I felt like they are outliers in other people's experience, they are their own world, and they are not within the range of other's neighborhood experience. |
|
The rest of my neighborhoods were placed fairly close together within the cul-de-sac, comfortably against one another. Some of the houses don't have neighborhood coverage yet, mostly because I am about to move, and my neighborhood is still coming to be. I think the cul-de-sac is ironic and worked well for my neighborhood because I feel like my neighborhoods have been so varied throughout my life, that fitting them into a stereotypical american suburban cul-de-sac ads a bit of humor to the work. Performing and Documenting a Derive
Layer 1
"I couldnt get the idea of "lack of purpose" out of my head during my walk, which effected my walk, the objects I chose, and the way I walked. I kept overthinking my photos, noticing similarities between them and similarities in what attracted me to different objects."
|
Layer 2
"This led me to consciously deter away from these "connections," in order to pursue a "lack of purpose." The idea that taking a photo of one thing, and having that photo link me to the next thing I am attracted to (because of some similarity or pattern between the two) was frustrating in my search for "aimless wandering."
|
Layer 3
"I used a chain to connect my locations, in order to symbolize that throughout my walk, my objects, and thoughts were connected, but also to raise questions about how that imprisons the idea of "aimless wandering," at least for my walk."

Group Project: Digital Derive
|
"Playing off of the irony of Guy Debord's "spectacle", this youtube group derive begins to address the issues of mass media, visual availability, and entertainment central to Social Internationalist theory."

Final Mapping Project: Below the Surface
As a final studio project for University of Florida's Mapping and Place studio class, I decided to explore ideas surrounding travel, relationships, and the connections between the two. This work intends to "map" how relationships transcend physical space and boundaries, explore how relationships are connected to the land, and how they interlace with one another below the surface to effect my sense of place within the world.
