Below the Surface
This work intends to "map" how relationships transcend physical space and boundaries, explore how relationships are connected to the land, and how they interlace with one another below the surface to effect my sense of place within the world.
The landscape is intended to represent the experiences Ive had within a specific place. The topography is created on top of old maps collaged within pages of a book. The pages were then cut and laid horizontally, creating a topographical landscape from seven pages, each representing a different place and experience.
The small stitches that extend through the landscape represent the different travels that I have experienced, how I have navigated through those experiences, and the places I have been. Places that have significance have been circled, and the stitches simulate direction, movement, and growth. |
Colors of the string represent different relationships, with length representing the significance of that relationship to myself. Open or cut strings symbolize broken relationships, or people that were important in that place at that time, but that I am no longer in contact with. Colored strings are tied together, showing connections between different people, and how they connect back to myself. There is a purple string that rides along the base of the landscape, which suggest my family, and how they are a constant in my life, and even if they aren't at a specific place with me, they are always with me. Six pieces of string intentionally lengthen beyond the surface of the landscape to symbolize how I expect those relationships to extend into the unknown future. |
